Rules for the Quiz – 2017

Most important rule: Judges Decision will be final.

All Participants are requested to report at registration desk Piscataway High School on 23rd December 2017 at 10:00 AM. Each participant will be assigned their tags and will get guidance to go to class rooms for written Test. After participants go to classroom parents are requested to go in Auditorium to participate in parents/youth discussion.

Format for Written Test

  1. First part of the Quiz competition is written test.
  2. This test consists of multiple choice questions for all levels.
  3. For level 1 and 2, proctors in the classrooms read and explain the questions.
  4. In case of ties students are given another test to break the tie.
  5. Five top scorers from each level go for the oral competition in the auditorium.
  • 5 Finalists will be selected from each level
  • There will be 3 types of Rounds

No-Buzzer Round

  1. Questions will be asked to each participant directly
  2. Participants will have 10 seconds to answer the question
  3. If the answer is correct, the participant will receive +2 points
  4. There is no Negative marking for the No-Buzzer Round

Buzzer Round

  1. The moderator will ask a question and the participant, who presses the buzzer first, will be given the opportunity to answer
  2. The participant will have 10 seconds to answer the question
  3. If the answer is correct, the participant will receive +2 points
  4. But since this is a Buzzer round, the participant will receive -1 point for an incorrect answer or No answer within the time limit

Transfer Round

  1. Questions will be asked to each participant directly
  2. The participant will have 10 seconds to answer the question
  3. If the answer is correct, the participant will receive +2 points
  4. If the answer is incorrect or No answer within the time limit, the question will be open to other participants
  5. The participant who presses the buzzer first, will have the chance to answer
  6. If the answer is correct, the participant will receive +1 bonus point
  7. If the answer is incorrect or No answer, he/she will receive -1 point
  8. A question can be transferred only once

Rounds for each level will be as follows:

Level 1&2:               No-Buzzer Round (in case of a tie, Buzzer can be used)

Level 3:                      One No-Buzzer Round then all Buzzer Rounds

Level 4, 5 & 6:           One Transfer Round then all Buzzer Rounds

Additional Considerations:

  • In case of an incomplete answer or some other dispute, the Judges will consult among themselves then they will either

a)  award partial credit (+1 point)

Or (in case of a serious dispute)

b) void the question altogether, in which case the participant will not receive any points

  •  If a participant reaches a net score of –3 point, the Judges will inform the Moderator and this participant will no longer participate
  • In case of a Tie, additional questions will be asked
  • The Winner and the Runner-up will be determined based on their Net Scores

Handling of Tie:

At the end of each round, the Judges will look at the Net Score of each participant and ask these questions:

a) Is there a “Clear Winner”?

b) Is there a “Clear Runner-up”?

If the answer to both questions is “Yes” the Judges will consider that Level as “completed” and they will inform the Moderator.

If the answer to even one question is “No” then there must be a “Tie”.  Judges will identify those who have Tie and ask rest of the participants to step back (they will not be asked any more questions). The participants who remain on the podium, will be asked additional questions, to break the Tie.
