On Monday, May 25, thousands watched in horror as Houston native George Floyd’s took his last struggled breaths while his life was taken without any cause or concern by an officer of the Minneapolis Police Department.
In light of this, ICNA CSJ conducted a webinar to look at the structured racism that is apparent in America today:
ICNA CSJ started a petition for the sademanding justice for the murder of George Floyd and calling for the police officers involved to be put to trial and charged with murder. The petition will be sent to Minneapolis mayor Jason Frey as well as DA Mike Freeman: https://icnacsj.org/justiceforfloyd/
In Houston, Texas, ICNA CSJ-TX also joined Black Lives Matter in a rally at Discovery Green for this.
ICNA CSJ issued a statement saying it is “deeply saddened by and strongly condemns the murder of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers. This shows yet another display of police brutality where an unarmed African American has lost their life. The officers have since been fired from their jobs.
The death of George Floyd proves that systemic structured racism and oppression of African Americans is still prevalent in America today. One of the reasons we still hear of news like this is because of the lack of accountability and responsibility that police have in America for such actions. The lack of justice in these police brutality killings and murder cases permit more and more to occur. ICNA CSJ believes these officers should be put to trial to the fullest extent of the law, just as any other citizen would have been.
ICNA CSJ-TX said “Floyd’s death serves as a stark reminder that we are still living in dark times of racism, inequality, and injustice.”

(Houston, Sept 22, 2019) – ICNA Council for Social Justice helped coordinate what could be the largest protest in American history against a foreign politician.
While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attracted one of the largest receptions for a foreign head of state, nearly 20,000 people protested against him and the policies of his government in Houston, Texas yesterday on September 22, 2019.
ICNA CSJ Texas Chapter was involved from the beginning along with several other organizations in planning for the massive protests. Over 300 organizers and volunteers worked non-stop in arranging for the logistics and in publicizing the protests and making sure no untoward incident occurred.

Mar 07 2019, DALLAS – A Muslim call center has received about 200 hate calls in a week after a billboard was put up in Dallas to help clear negative stereotypes about hijabs and Muslim women.
Ruman Sadiq represents the Islamic Center of North America Dallas and GainPeace. She says they felt compelled to act after an alleged attack Dec. 30 of a Muslim woman wearing a hijab at the Reunion Tower.
“What better way to take action than by educating people about why we wear the hijab and what it really means,” she said. The organization started by setting up booths around North Texas, like the one in February in Klyde Warren Park.
“They could try on a hijab for a day. They asked us questions on why we wear it and what rights Muslim women have,” Sadiq said. “It was amazing how much positive feedback we received and how little people knew about our faith.”
The experience inspired a six-week public outreach campaign and paid for a billboard on southbound I-35E near Northwest Highway.
The main goal of the campaign was to portray the hijab — a head covering worn by many Muslim women — as a symbol of empowerment and not repression. But the response to them was much different.
After the billboard was put up in Dallas, GainPeace’s call center received more hate calls “than from any billboard in the last 12 years of GainPeace’s campaigns,” according to Dr. Sabeel Ahmed, the director of the call center at GainPeace.
Call center officials said they did get some callers with genuine questions about the hijab.
But they also heard from callers who would yell profanities and then hang up, as well some people who would say, “You are terrorists. Go home.”
But Sadiq says angry callers hiding behind a veil of anonymity won’t stop the effort or the billboards.
“Engage with us,” she said. “That’s the only way to arrive at a better understanding of one another.”
Call center employees touch on several talking points when responding to these hateful callers:

Ruman Sadiq says the current political climate has led to misperceptions of Muslim women. That’s why she hopes a new six-week billboard campaign will encourage people to call and ask questions about the hijab, or head scarf.
“It’s very difficult at times for Muslim women to go out in public wearing a veil,” said Sadiq, an outreach volunteer with the Dallas Chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America. “We face a lot of discrimination in educational institutions, in the supermarkets and public arenas.”
The billboard – at Interstate 35 and Northwest Highway in Dallas – features a woman wearing a hijab, along with a 1-800 number and the words: respect, honor and strength. The Islamic Circle partnered with a Chicago-area based group GainPeace to place the billboard in Dallas. Other billboards have gone up across the country, including Houston and Chicago.
